Commitment to triple renewable energy capacity to tackle climate change: COP-28
World leaders attending the United Nations climate summit in the United Arab Emirates pledged to triple the world’s renewable energy capacity by 2030.
The 2-day high-level meeting concluded in Dubai on December 04, 2023, with speeches from leaders of around 140 countries and regions.
They discussed ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The United Arab Emirates, the COP-28’s president, announced that more than 110 governments have agreed to a commitment to triple renewable energy and double the rate of global energy efficiency by 2030.
Majid Al Suwaidi, COP-28 director-general and ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, said participants agreed on the first day of talks on rules governing the “losses and compensation” fund.
He said, “The countries have already agreed on many issues, but this is only the beginning.”
In discussions on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, leaders of European and island nations emphasized the need to stop using fossil fuels.
Because there are so many differences between governments, there is a need for more discussion on how to reduce fossil fuel use.
