The DNCC gives two months to stop the dumping of sewage in drains and reservoirs

The Dhaka North City Corporation has set a deadline of March 31 for those who have made arrangements for direct disposal of rainwater to drains, canals, lakes, or other reservoirs without constructing septic tanks.

The Northern City Corporation issued a notice on Sunday, saying they would take legal action against them if they did not do so within the given time.

It said septic tanks and soak wells should be set up in homes, commercial establishments, and other establishments as per government norms for proper sewerage management.

“Even then, the sewerage lines of many houses and installations have been directly connected to various storm-water drains, canals, lakes, and reservoirs of the DNCC. Which are a serious threat to the environment and a punishable offense under the Local Government Act 2009. ”

Dhaka Northside residents have been requested to install septic tanks and soak wells by March 31 to disconnect illegal sewerage lines of all houses, commercial establishments, and other establishments on their initiative.

According to a research report by the Bangladesh Institute of Planners (BIP) in 2019, 1.5 million cubic meters of sewage is generated in Dhaka every day, of which 20 percent remains at the source. And only 40,000 cubic meters goes to the mad sewage treatment plant.

The remaining 11 lakh 70 thousand cubic meters of waste is discharged untreated and going to the river. If the river pollution is not stopped in this way, even if crores of rupees are spent, it will not be possible for WASA to supply pure and safe water in Dhaka, the report said.
