The campaign to stop the use of polythene bags is starting from November 1 across the country. The government will strictly enforce the ban on producing, storing, transporting, marketing, and using polyethylene and polypropylene shopping bags.

Syeda Rizwana Hasan, an advisor to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Bangladesh, spoke at a consultation meeting on September 25 with shop owners and plastic product traders about controlling plastic pollution.

The environmental advisor said that earlier it was decided to conduct raids only in super shops from October 1. That will also be implemented. All market authorities in the country will independently ban illegal polythene shopping bags starting October 1.



The Department of Environment (Bangladesh) will implement an awareness program in this work. Along with the government, businessmen also have to play a responsible role.

In a meeting with businessmen, Syeda Rizwana Hasan emphasized the need for alternatives to plastic to protect the environment and support sustainable development.

The present traders and shop owners agreed to the government’s decision and assured the necessary assistance. He said that on September 29, a plastic alternative fair has been organized at the Department of Environment.

In the meeting, Secretary and Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Environment Ministry of Bangladesh, Helal Uddin of the President of Bangladesh Shop Owners Association, Abu Motaleb is the President of the Bangladesh Plastic Packaging Roll Manufacturers Owners and Trade Association, Shamim Ahmed is the President of the Bangladesh Plastic Products Manufacturer and Exporter Association, Kamrul Hasan is the President of the Plastic and Rubber Shoe Merchant Association of Bangladesh, and Jalal Uddin President is the president of the Bangladesh Bread and Confectionery Manufacturers Association, Leaders of various business associations including were present at the meeting.
