Bangladesh news: Apart from chemicals, 3,000 tons of plastic-polythene is being dumped in the river every day. And the bulk of this is being dumped from vessels or coming from four hundred dumping stations of two city corporations of Dhaka.
This is destroying the ecosystem. Aquatic and vegetable fauna, including fish on the verge of extinction. This pollution is also having a long-term effect on the human body through the food cycle.
From Sadarghat, Dhaka to South Bengal and across the country, more than one hundred vessels carry more than one lakh passengers every day.
More than one lakh passengers travel from Sadarghat, Dhaka to all over the country, including South Bengal a day, and more than one hundred vessels carry them. From packets of chips-biscuits, water bottles, and one-time used plastic items are thrown into the river.
Even if some vessels have separate bins for preserving these wastes, they are not used. Although a meeting was held by the Bangladesh Water Transport Authority’s initiation to stop dumping plastic materials in the river, the vessel owners are not abiding by it.
Along with these wastes of daily commodities, the pollution of plastic factories is also causing river hazards. There are no more fish in the rivers around Dhaka, but small plastic granules.
Every day thousands of types of polythene-plastic compounds are mixed in the water. The effects of this pollution are falling directly in the life and nature of the river.
There are four hundred dumping stations of two city corporations on Dhaka’s rivers, including the Buriganga, the Balu, and the Turag. From here, 3,500 metric tons of plastic and polythene are being dumped in the river every day.
We need to save the earth by fixing this environmental issue as soon as possible.
