Floods, severe river erosion, waterlogging, salinity and drought-related crises are becoming increasingly serious in Bangladesh due to climate change. The current Bangladesh government has laid special emphasis on adopting long-term and integrated plans to address these multifaceted natural disasters.
This common strategic position was highlighted in a high-level bilateral meeting held with World Bank Bangladesh Mission Chief Gian Pesme at the Secretariat of the Ministry of Water Resources.
Actions and strategies: The meeting covered some specific plans to boost the country’s ability to handle climate issues and use water sustainably:
River and canal digging project: The action of digging or re-digging rivers, canals, and water bodies nationwide is speeding up to keep rivers flowing normally and remove waterlogging. The government is prioritizing infrastructure development to reduce the damage caused by river erosion and floods.
The two sides decided to boost the World Bank’s financial and expert assistance. They will use modern technology to tackle climate change risks, improve institutions, and manage water resources. Gian Pesme reiterated the World Bank’s strong commitment to continue its consistent support for Bangladesh to achieve climate resilience.
