Bangladesh government is increasing the use of blocks to protect the environment
Syeda Rizwana Hasan, a key environmentalist and advisor in Bangladesh’s interim government, emphasized that increasing the use of blocks in government construction can help reduce air pollution and protect agricultural land.
A view-sharing meeting was held in the meeting room of the ministry at the Bangladesh Secretariat on February 23. The meeting discussed increasing the use of blocks to reduce air pollution and conserve agricultural land. Advisor to the Ministry of Housing and Public Works and Industries, Adilur Rahman Khan was also present at the meeting.
Syeda Rizwana Hasan said, “The use of blocks is not only environmentally friendly, it also increases the efficiency and sustainability of the construction sector. We will implement this goal in coordination with all the ministries and stakeholders concerned.”
She also said, “This initiative is a groundbreaking step in environmental conservation and sustainable development. We are committed to implementing this plan in coordination with all the concerned departments.”
The meeting focused on a range of policy initiatives aimed at boosting block production and enhancing its utilization. Exempting blocks from VAT, making customs and taxes more manageable, and reducing import duties on block production equipment are now crucial.
There were suggestions to update the rate schedule for LGED, the Public Works Department, City Corporation, and municipalities to promote the use of blocks in development projects.
To ensure the quality of all block types, national standards were established in collaboration with the Housing and Building Research Institute (HBRI) and BSTI.
