Bangladesh is working to conserve biodiversity: Environment Minister of Bangladesh
Saber Hossain Chowdhury, the Minister, Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change (MOEFCC), Bangladesh, talked about the government’s efforts to protect the environment and prevent land degradation. He mentioned that the government is carrying out projects, like sustainable land management, to reduce land degradation and preserve biodiversity.
To reduce topsoil use in brick kilns, a plan to use blocks instead of bricks in government construction has been created.
Coordinated activities have been undertaken to restore encroached forest land. Between October 2020 and April 2024, approximately 30,000 acres of forest land in the country were cleared for afforestation purposes.
The environment minister made statements at a press conference in the Ministry’s meeting room recently.
Saber Hossain Chowdhury said the government has continued afforestation and forest conservation, restoration of degraded forests and sustainable forest management.
“Between 2009-2010 and the 2022-23 financial year, 217,402 hectares and 30,252 kilometers of seedling strip gardens were established, and 112.10 million seedlings were distributed and planted. This year, 83.327 million saplings will be planted throughout the country during the monsoon season,” the Minister informed.
