Dhaka University Cycling Club organized a bicycle rally to commemorate Language Martyrs’ Day
Today, February 25, 2025, at 3 p.m., a large bicycle rally took place at the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka to honor the language and the martyrs.
The rally was organized by the Dhaka University Cycling Club and sponsored by Duronto Bicycle, K.A. S Group. Around 200 young cyclists from different schools, including the Dhaka University Cycling Club and the Bangladesh Cycle Lane Implementation Council, took part in the rally. The rally began and ended at the Central Shaheed Minar, passing through Dhaka University’s TSC, Kala Bhavan, and Surya Sen Hall.
A brief discussion on the benefits of cycling took place at the start and end of the rally. The discussion, led by Dhaka University Cycling Club President Tohidur Rahman, included key figures such as special advisor Raihan Ferdous, advisor Mahbudul Hasan Hasmi, acting secretary Zahir Uddin, Assistant Director Sadia Sabur, Green Page chief advisor Md Mahfuzur Rahman, Brain Life and Hospital manager Fakhrul Hossain, Bangladesh Cycle Lane Implementation Council President Md Aminul Islam Tubbus, DU Chhatra Dal editor Mahmudul Hasan, and Master Wheel manager Arif Ahmed. Ms. Ivy Akhter moderated the program.
The speaker emphasized that cycling is an affordable, convenient, and safe way to travel, while also promoting fitness and health. The speakers emphasized the importance of cycling as an eco-friendly transportation method that doesn’t use fossil fuels like petrol or diesel.
Cycling can help reduce traffic jams in Dhaka and other cities. A revolution is needed to promote cycling as a mode of transport for short-distance travel across the country. And only the youth can bring about such a revolution.
The speaker mentioned that a lack of bicycle parking is the main barrier to cycling’s growth in the country. While there are parking spaces for cars at offices, courts, markets, shopping malls, playgrounds, parks, street corners, and residential areas, there are no designated areas for parking bicycles.
As a result, the use of bicycles is not increasing due to a lack of a safe bicycle parking system. Establishing safe bicycle parking in public areas and schools, along with installing CCTV cameras, can encourage cycling across the country. As cycling increases, cycle lanes will naturally form on roads.
Therefore, the speaker expressed the opinion that the work of establishing bicycle parking can be started at Dhaka University. It is necessary to take a program to start establishing 5/10 bicycle parking spaces in each place per month, including TSC, Central Shaheed Minar, Kala Bhaban, and every academic and residential hall of Dhaka University, Agrani Schools, and the Central Library.
If possible, the speakers expressed their hope that the trend would spread throughout the country within a short time. To promote cycling in the country, organizations and individuals who love bicycles are encouraged to begin their efforts immediately.
At the end of the rally, the organizers thanked everyone, including the cyclists, and concluded with a refreshment.
