Environmental Crime: Criminals Get Away with a Weak Legal Framework

Weaknesses in Environmental Protection Law: International Trends in Criminals Get Away with a Developing Country

Even though pollution and damage to the environment are growing worldwide, especially in developing countries, the number of lawsuits in environmental courts and the rate of convictions for offenders are quite low.

International groups focused on the environment and legal experts have said that those who commit environmental crimes often escape punishment.

This is because the current laws for protecting the environment are weak, and the law is not enforced well against powerful people and government agencies.

In countries like Bangladesh, weak environmental laws and few chances to take legal action make it hard to prevent harm to the environment. In the absence of an effective legal system, long-term pollution continues, which ultimately prolongs economic losses.

Experts want separate environmental courts, like those in China or Scandinavian countries, to quickly handle pollution cases. They also think environmental education should be required in schools. This highlights the importance of ensuring environmental justice for international policymakers.
