Dr. Shirin Sarmin Chowdhury, the Speaker of the National Parliament Bangladesh, asked for a decisive role of parliamentarians in financing climate-risk countries.

She said, “Members of parliament should be more vocal in Westminster in providing financial support to climate risk countries, including Bangladesh. The G20 summit should play a strong role in eliminating harmful carbon emissions and global warming to avoid climate change disaster.”

The Speaker said these things in the speech of the chief guest in the interactive dialogue titled ‘Bangladesh Rising’ with the members of the British Parliament organized by the Bangladesh High Commission in London.

The Speaker emphasized institutional cooperation between Bangladesh and British parliamentarians, particularly strengthening parliamentary democracy and good governance, Agenda 2030, climate change, women empowerment, and resolving the Rohingya crisis.

Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury said, “Bangladesh has been providing shelter and protection to 1.1 million Rohingyas who fled from Myanmar for five years. The only solution to the Rohingya crisis is the safe and sustainable return of the oppressed Rohingyas to Myanmar.”

The Speaker urged the British parliamentarians to play a leading global role in the sustainable solution to the Rohingya crisis.

Tributing respect to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the Speaker said, “Bangabandhu’s enduring and invaluable friendship with the then British Prime Minister and members of parliament from both the Conservative and Labor parties inspired a robust and multi-faceted bilateral activity between Bangladesh and the UK.”

At the ‘Bangladesh Rising’ event, the Speaker exchanged views with the members of the British Parliament on the incredible progress of Bangladesh’s economy in the last decade under the bold and dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

At this time, the Speaker also highlighted the contribution of four British-Bangladeshi members of parliament and one member of the House of Lords of Bangladeshi origin in strengthening Bangladesh-UK friendship.

British MPs and members of the House of Lords praised the outstanding economic success achieved by Bangladesh in the last decade under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. They recognized Bangladesh as the new Asian Tiger.

The Speaker invited all British parliamentarians and members of the House of Lords to visit Bangladesh on the occasion of 50 years of Bangladesh-UK historical diplomatic relations.

After the event, the Speaker visited the ‘Bangabandhu Centenary Peace Grove’ established by the Government of Bangladesh in collaboration with the London Borough of Brent at Gladstone Park in London. Hundreds of saplings are planted here on the eve of the historic Mujib Year.
