Fish cat is also important for protecting the environment: Environment and Forest Advisor, Bangladesh
Not only fish cat, but all endangered animals must be protected from cruelty, said Syeda Rizwana Hasan, a leading environmentalist and advisor in Bangladesh’s interim government, in charge of the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MOEFCC), Bangladesh, and the Ministry of Water Resources (MOWR), Bangladesh.
She made these remarks during a discussion and award ceremony for World Fish Cat Day 2025 at the Forest Department recently.
The advisor said, “Conserving fish cat is not only animal rights, it is also important for protecting the environment. Every animal in nature has a role to play. Therefore, it is our responsibility to protect them.”
“Killing fish cat just on the charge of eating chicken is wrong. If its killing continues, it will be at risk of extinction. Therefore, public awareness must be raised,” she expressed.
The advisor noted that Bangladesh Government’s administrators are running awareness programs to protect fish cats, but emphasized the need to involve law enforcement agencies as well. However, involving truly loving couples will be more effective.
The media should not only express regret, but also highlight the environmental importance of fish cat. Call on District Administrators of the Bangladesh Government to raise awareness about wildlife conservation in educational institutions.
Stating that criminals should be brought to justice, the advisor said that social awareness should be created alongside the law. Responsibility towards nature should be increased. It is possible to overcome the crisis if an effective afforestation plan is implemented.
