Forest rescue operation in the country to continue to protect the environment: Environment Advisor of Bangladesh

The forest rescue operation will continue despite all obstacles, said Syeda Rizwana Hasan, advisor in Bangladesh’s Interim Government, in charge of the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MOEFCC), Bangladesh and the Ministry of Water Resources (MOWR), Bangladesh.

She spoke at a seminar on reducing carbon emissions from agriculture, forests, and other lands in line with Bangladesh’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) at the CIRDAP auditorium in Dhaka on January 1.

The environment advisor said that the forest rescue operation will continue despite all obstacles. The current government has canceled the previous allocation of 700 acres of forest land for the Administration Academy and 20 acres for the Bangladesh Football Federation.

In addition, the process of canceling the allocation of 156 acres of forest land allocated for an institution named after the brother of a former cabinet secretary is in the final stage. She said that to prevent climate change, energy efficiency must also be achieved at the individual level.

She stated that land, forests, and wetlands will be part of the new Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) for climate change mitigation.

However, there are many complex challenges, including deforestation and land degradation, to achieve the NDC target. To overcome these obstacles, an environmentally friendly and sustainable approach must be adopted.

Dr. Dwijen Mallick from the Bangladesh Center for Advanced Studies delivered the keynote speech at the seminar, which was chaired by Khushi Kabir, Chairperson of ALRD.

Dr. Mohammad Moniruzzaman Khan, Associate Professor of Dhaka University;  Dr. Nazim Uddin, Senior Scientific Officer of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute;  Gazi Mohammad Suhrawardy, Researcher of the Center for Knowledge;

A. K. M. Azad Rahman, Coordinator of the LOGIC Project of UNDP Bangladesh, and Khandaker Mainuddin, Senior Fellow of BCAS, among others participated in the panel discussion.
