Hydropower generation essential to reduce dependence on fossil fuels: Muhammad Yunus
Muhammad Yunus, a Nobel laureate from Bangladesh, and the Chief Advisor of the present Bangladesh Interim Government stressed the importance of creating a new grid to boost hydropower production and distribution, aiming to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Muhammad Yunus.
Today (November 13) in Baku (COP29) he said, that grid will be able to meet the needs of four South Asian countries, India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan.
During a meeting with social business representatives, Muhammad Yunus stated that the hydropower potential of the four Himalayan countries is underutilized due to the absence of an electricity grid between them.
In that conversation, the representatives of Nepal said that their country has 40,000 megawatts of hydropower generation capacity. This production can greatly reduce India and Bangladesh’s dependence on fossil fuels.
At this time, Yunus said, India, Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh should seriously think about making a grid for South Asia.
He also said that Bangladesh can easily bring necessary electricity from Nepal if there is a grid. The distance between Bangladesh and Nepal is approximately 40 to 50 km.
The grid will make Nepal’s hydropower readily available. Bangladesh currently receives electricity from Nepal through the Indian grid.
The chief advisor reminded in this context that water has become a major environmental problem for Bangladesh. To solve that problem, water management should be done in such a way that it is nature friendly. He said that priority should be given to the water system to prevent floods and increase economic growth.
