Monster made of discarded plastic on Cox’s Bazar beach
A monster sculpture made of plastic waste is on display at Cox’s Bazar Sea beach, created by the Bidyanondo Foundation in collaboration with the local administration.
The plastic monster was made by a group of artists from the Institute of Fine Arts of Dhaka University. The 62-foot-tall monster was made from about 10 metric tons of plastic discarded in the sea.
On the beach, a giant robot made of plastic is seen standing on the sandbank of Seagull Point on Cox’s Bazar beach. Although the monster is a flesh-and-blood symbol, its violent claws constantly damage human bodies, nature, and wildlife.
Organizers report that millions of tourists visit St. Martin’s Island and Cox’s Bazar beach daily to enjoy their beauty. Plastic waste is contaminating the beach and seawater, leading to rising pollution that threatens marine life and human health.
Mohammad Salahuddin, Deputy Commissioner of Cox’s Bazar, stated that plastic is destroying the sea and public life and that this urgent issue must be addressed quickly.
This sculpture exhibition initiative has been launched to raise awareness and share an important warning with all. “I hope that through this exhibition, people will be more careful about using plastic,” he added.
Sculptor Abir Karmakar used plastic waste, wood, nails, glue, and other materials to create the monster.
On November 7, a ‘Plastic Exchange Store’ for tourists and a ‘Plastic Exchange Market’ for locals were opened on Cox’s Bazar beach.
People can exchange empty containers, bottles, and plastic packets for daily necessities like rice, pulses, oil, sugar, and salt. Tourists can also win gifts such as books, pens, caps, and bags.
