The Interim Government of Bangladesh will give priority to Climate change and the Environment

Lawyer and Environmentalist Syed Rezwana Choudhury, the advisor (Minister in Charge) of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MOEFCC), Bangladesh, said the Interim Government of Bangladesh will work to minimize the pollution, save the water bodies and decrease one-time used plastic.

Environmentalists’ hope rose after getting charge (Minister in Charge) of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MOEFCC), Bangladesh by Syed Rezwana Choudhury. Shahanur Rahman Thomson, the executive Co-Ordinator of YouthNet for Climate Justice, Bangladesh, told Reuters Foundation,

“We hope the Interim Government of Bangladesh will bring benefit for the general Bangladeshis’ in terms of Climate issues, because of such an Environment Activist who worked with us has got the charge (Minister-in-charge) of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MOEFCC), Bangladesh.”

The most important work will be the Interim Government of Bangladesh, which is to create job facilities for its people. Mr. Rahman thinks by expanding the renewable energy sector will create a room of huge jobs.

The previous government wanted to create 40,000 “Green Jobs” by 2030 and generate 40% of the country’s electricity from renewable sources by 2041. He seems, the implementation of these goals was very slow.

A fund called the “Bangladesh Climate and Development Platform (BCDP)” was created in December 2023 to invest in reducing climate damage in Bangladesh. The fund is for improving the lives of communities vulnerable to climate change.

Different financial organizations, bilateral development partners and nongovernment organizations, including IMF, will finance this fund.

Mr. Zakir Hossain, Chief Executive of the Change Initiative in Dhaka, believes that a large number of skilled workers will be required to achieve the BCDP’s goal.

He hoped that the organizations that work in the field of environment and climate sector would be stable and active as usual at the regime of the Interim Government. Mr. Khan said a number of rules and regulations related to the environment and climate change are under formulation. He hopes these will run smoothly under the Interim Government of Bangladesh.
