The mother’s womb is also prone to plastic contamination
Day by day we are becoming dependent on plastic which is becoming a big threat. The effects of plastic pollution have reached everywhere from the belly of fish to the mountains. But this time, according to what scientists have said, it is really a matter of great concern, especially in an important place in human life. That place is the womb of the mother. This is the first time scientists have witnessed such an event.
The experiments were performed in Italy, where researchers found tiny plastic particles in the wombs of several pregnant women. As part of the study, the women donated their uterus to the researchers after giving birth.
Environmental and health sciences journal the Environment International has published a dubious research article on this. The journal is published by Elsevier, a Dutch-based science, technical and medical information and analytics firm.
According to the research article, all the women in the study gave birth without any complications. It is not yet clear whether the tiny plastic particles found in their wombs have any harmful effects on the newborn or mother’ body.
However, experts warn that the possibility of plastic in the mother’s womb could be a matter of great concern. Fatebenefratelli Hospital, Rome, Italy mainly provides services and research in women’s and maternity health.
Researchers say that the presence of plastic in the body is abnormal and if it is, then the immune system should respond naturally. But so far no such reaction has been seen in the bodies of those mothers or their children.
Antonio Ragusa, Head of The Gynaecology and Obstetrics Department at Fatebenefratelli Hospital and head of the research paper, said mothers who had tiny plastic particles in their uterus were shocked to learn that many were reluctant to believe. “When I first discovered plastic particles in a mother’s womb, I became speechless and my ability to think was blocked,” she said of her condition.
According to the research article, all the plastic particles found in the womb are coloured. Such materials are used in various products including dyes, adhesives, plasters, nail polishes, polymers and cosmetics.
In a presentation on the use and pollution of plastics around the world, the researchers said that in the last one hundred years, global plastic production has increased to about 330 million tons per year. 40-45 percent of these are disposable packaging plastics.
Plastic particles can also act as carriers of other chemicals, they say. Immune system identifies plastic particles inside the human body as external material. Necessary feedback is also made accordingly.
In the research article, the researchers concluded, ‘The mother’s womb is very important for the growth and development of the fetus. It also serves as a source of communication between the fetus and the outside world. The presence of these potentially harmful plastic particles in such a place is a matter of great concern.
