The name of the River Occupiers should disclose to protect the River
Mohammad Ejaz, Chairman of River and Delta Research Center, demanded the disclosure of the names of 2,400 encroachers whose names came up in the survey of the Jatio Nodi Rakkha Commission (National River Conservation Commission), Bangladesh recently.
This demand was raised in a discussion meeting with the Bangladesh River Foundation (BRF). The round table discussion meeting was held on January 28, 2023, as part of the civil partnership and social responsibility to prevent pollution and encroachment of Karnaphuli River.
Mohammad Ejaz presided over the meeting, and Kamal Parvez, President of Karnaphuli Protection Council, conducted the meeting.
Md. Abul Hasan, Associate professor at Chittagong University of Engineering & Technology, presented a study highlighting the reality of illegal occupation and pollution at the meeting.
In the meeting, Khorshed Alam Sujan, the former administrator of Chattogram City Corporation, expressed his anger and said, “Despite various discussions and criticisms about the Karnaphuli river, nothing has been done because the only major problem is lack of coordination.”
Md. Giasuddin, Panel Mayor of Chattogram City Corporation, informed that the Chittagong Development Authority (CDA) and the Army are working on implementing the drainage project in 37 canals connected to the Karnaphuli River.
He said, “Since the CDA or the Army work under executive orders, there is no option for coordination.”
