The Turag River has turned into a sewer due to occupation and pollution
Sharif Jamil, General Secretary of Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA) and coordinator of Waterkeepers Bangladesh , said, ” The Turag is no longer a river; instead, it has turned into a sewer drain due to pollution.
The condition of the Turag river is getting worse day by day. Earlier it was Kohar Darya (Kohar sea). Later, it became the Turag river. Now it has turned into a sewer due to pollution. “
Sharif Jamil said this at a community meeting on the occupation of the Turag river and pollution remediation. The Water Keepers Bangladesh has organized the event at Uttara Primary School ground adjacent to Aminbazar in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
Sharif Jamil said, “To protect Turag from pollution, the connected rivers and canals upstream of Turag must protect. Usually, waste from the garments and tannery industry ends up here.
Turag pollution is creating a humanitarian catastrophe in the people’s lives on the banks. So now river pollution is not only in Dhaka city center. It is affecting the lives of people around Dhaka. “
Md. Rakib Ahmed, Chairman of the Amin Bazar Union Parished (আমিন বাজার ইউনিয়ন পরিষদ), said in a speech as the chief guest,
“All the canals and lakes of this Aminbazar union have to vacate. Everyone must work together to make this Turag river pollution-free. For this, all of them need to be united. “
Mohammad Ejaz, chairman of the River and Delta Research Centre (RDRC), said, “Turag has been declared a living being by the honorable High Court. Now everyone must come forward to save this dying river. For this, the people along the river must involve. “
On occasion, ‘Turag Nadi Morcha (Turag River Front)’ was announced to protect the Turag river.
