The UN wants China to play leadership in place of the USA in terms of climate change
During the COP29 opening ceremony, John D. Podesta, the head of the US delegation’s commitment to keep continuing the investment in the field of alternative energy, which proved so much hollowness on November 16’s Donald Trump’s decision.
This decision deeply disappointed the climate activists present at the conference. They thought that all protests and works of them for so long against climate change is going to be vain.
President Trump has appointed Chris Wright, a fossil fuel and natural gas entrepreneur, as his energy minister after winning the recent US election. Trump’s appointment at the climate conference shows his firm position against the demands of global environmental activists.
Trump has called the movement a ‘scam’ in the past. He said that all this is happening at the instigation of China. He will not deviate from the path of using fossil fuels.
After being first elected in 2016, Trump also withdrew from the Paris Agreement in 2020. Now, his dark shadow has once again fallen on the environmental movement.
UN climate official Simon Steele has delivered an important message, possibly in response to concerns about the environmental movement after Trump’s potential second term.
He said that China must lead the global fight against climate change. Xi Jinping challenged Trump by urging China to present a strong new climate action plan to help mitigate global warming.
Simon Steele, Executive Secretary of the UN Climate Change, praised China’s investment in clean energy technology as a global example to follow. Their ability to lead is also emerging from that example.
Steele also issued a warning to China. He said that they need to take stronger steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Adopting a strong action plan or Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) will send a crucial message to other countries. It will show that bold leadership, finance, development and environmental sustainability are compatible with each other.
The timing of Steele’s comments has become important because of Trump’s decision. It is also important for major developed countries, including China, to be proactive in tackling climate change. China has already set a target of peaking carbon emissions by 2030 and zero emissions by 2060.
However, many environmental activists believe that China needs to be more proactive. They should reduce the country’s emissions by 30 percent by 2035.
Trump’s United States is certainly competitive with China. Will Trump’s hidden initiative to use China in the interests of climate change be like picking thorns with thorns? Many questions are still unanswered in Baku.
