The use of eco-friendly bags should be increased

Tapan Kumar Biswas, Chairman of the monitoring committee and additional secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MOEFCC), Bangladesh, said that public awareness will be increased to increase the use of eco-friendly bags, while law enforcement will be made stricter.

He briefed reporters after monitoring efforts to prevent the use of plastic shopping bags at Karwan Raw Market in Dhaka on December 31.

Since November 3, 199 mobile courts have been operating across the country to enforce the ban on polythene shopping bags. In these operations, 414 organizations have been fined a total of Tk.2,572,300 and 50,556 kg of polythene shopping bags have been seized.



The monitoring committee chairman announced a ban on polythene bags to protect the environment and reduce plastic pollution. The MOEFCC), (Bangladesh) is making all-out efforts to make this initiative successful, and monitoring activities have been strengthened nationwide.

He said that all concerned should come forward for this government initiative in the interest of protecting the country’s environment.

The monitoring campaign encouraged shopkeepers and shoppers to use jute bags, cloth bags, and wax-coated brown paper bags. These alternative eco-friendly bags were displayed at various shops.

The campaign was attended by officials from the MOEFCC), Bangladesh, and the Department of Environment, Bangladesh.
