To protect the environment, work must be done to combat lead pollution

The Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MOFECC), Bangladesh, has launched a plan to address lead.

The first meeting of the multi-sectoral steering committee, Bangladesh’s Government, took place on November 5 in Dhaka to address lead pollution by identifying, controlling, and preventing its damage. the ministry. The meeting was held under the chairmanship of Farhina Ahmed.

The meeting decided to gather reports from different ministries and create rules under the Hazardous Substances Control Act to address lead pollution.

The committee will evaluate past activities of the participants and create a comprehensive policy based on the results of time-bound course of action. Sources of lead contamination must obtain environmental permits and address any identified deficiencies in efforts.



The meeting also emphasized capacity building and research on lead pollution monitoring. Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) will be implemented to address lead contamination in the battery and recycling sectors.

Campaigns will be launched to identify pollution sources. A small working committee will be formed from the Department of Health Services to develop more lab facilities. The Ministry of Education will also include this in the education program.

Various government institutions and international organizations attended the meeting, including UNICEF, WHO, World Bank, USAID, ADB, and Pure Earth Bangladesh. National organizations present included ESDO, the Bangladesh Paint Manufacturers Association, the Bangladesh Ship Breakers and Recyclers Association, the Accumulator Battery Manufacturers and Exporters Association, and Bangladesh Aluminium. Representatives from the Manufacturers Association were in attendance.
