We have to increase our adaptive capacity to cope with climate change: Agriculture Minister, Bangladesh
Dr. Abdur Razzak, Agriculture Minister of Bangladesh, said, “Bangladesh is a very disaster-prone country. Natural disasters often cause damage to crops. In this case, agricultural production must adapt to climate change.
The Agriculture Minister spoke at a sub-regional workshop on ‘South Asia Nitrogen Framework Policy’ at Hotel Sonargaon, Dhaka, on June 23, 2022. The South Asia Co-operative Environment Programme (SASEP) has organized the event.
The Minister said, “As a result of climate change, water logging, salinity, drought, etc., will increase. We are working to innovate and expand the technology of cultivable crops in these adverse environments.
The Government of Bangladesh commits to protecting the environment. The nitrogen efficiency in Bangladesh is very low, only 30-35 percent; washed the remaining 60-70 percent of the nitrogen. In this situation, cooperation among South Asian countries is very much needed to increase efficiency.
At the event, SASEP released a regional report on nitrogen pollution policy and management in South Asian countries. At the same time, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Maldives, and Nepal have also released their national reports.
The report identifies critical areas for the region to take urgent action to address the high and rapidly growing threat of nitrogen pollution to the environment, climate change, food security, human health, and the economy. Emphasis has also been placed on raising awareness about the problem of nitrogen pollution.
Releasing the Regional Policy Report, the Agriculture Minister said, “Agriculture is the main livelihood in South Asian countries where nitrogen management is very challenging in crop production and prevention of environmental pollution.
To ensure food security and environmental sustainability in the region, we need to increase cooperation and concerted efforts to develop sustainable nitrogen management.”
