Millions of people in Africa are at serious risk as a result of climate change

More than 100 million people in Africa are at risk of climate change. Some of the continent’s glaciers are expected to melt in the next two decades.

According to Al-Jazeera, a Qatar-based news portal, reported: “A new report published by United Nations reveals this information.”

The World Meteorological Organization released a report on October 21st. 2021 that paints a grim picture of climate change in Africa.

According to the estimation, More than 100 million people in Africa are vulnerable due to global warming. The continent’s 54 countries emit less than 4 percent of the world’s greenhouse gases.



Joseph Lionel Correa Sako, the African Union’s commissioner for rural economics and agriculture, said the estimation reveals that about 120 million people in Africa would face drought, floods, and extreme heat by 2030 if no preventive action got taken. Those whose income was less than 1.90 dollars got identified as extremely poor.

Sako further added that climate change in sub-Saharan Africa could reduce its GDP by up to 3 percent by 2050. The number of people affected by the effects of climate change is constantly increasing on the continent.

Petrie Talas, secretary-general of the World Meteorological Organization, said, “the Sea levels in Africa continued to rise along with the increasing temperature. Severe floods, landslides, and droughts also continued.
