What kind of people we are, what type of government we have, what kind of environment the country has can be understood by looking at the river Buriganga.  There were so many canals in Dhaka city. Where did these go? Such a question has been raised in a round table meeting in the capital.

The Urban Development Movement organized the National Press Club meeting on Wednesday morning.

Abu Naser Khan, chairman of the Save the Environment Movement (POBA), said that the state system is related to the environment.  If someone environment-friendly is the mayor, the environment will be good. Science has taken the world a long way. So, science must be given importance.

Former Vice-Chancellor of Patuakhali University of Science and Technology Abdul Latif expressed frustration over the government’s interest in coal and nuclear power plants.

He said the country’s environment was on the verge of collapse. Whereas the whole world is coming out of coal and nuclear power plants, these things are being done in our country.

A professor in the Department of Environmental Science at Jahangirnagar University, Emadul Huda, said that Brick kilns, vehicles, construction materials, and fossil fuels pollute the environment.

He also added, “In our country, during a construction one company dig a road in the morning and again in the afternoon another company digs the same road which makes the work unstable, but development works in the foreign countries are long-term and more advance.”

Professor Jamal Uddin of the Department of Environmental Sciences at Jahangirnagar University commented that noise pollution is the most severe pollution in the capital.

Citing data from a study he conducted, he said that in Shahbagh of the capital, 30 people had their ears examined, and at least 10 of them were deaf or hard of hearing.  Three of them have lost their hearing due to noise pollution.

Amir Mufti Syed Muhammad Rezaul Karim of the Islamic Movement was the chief guest at the function presided over by Sheikh Fazle Bari Masood, President of the Urban Development Movement.

He said crores of taka were allocated for the development of Dhaka city.  But, where is the money?  All have failed because of the failure of those in charge.
