In the last four months of 2022, nine dead dolphins have floated on Kuakata beach, Patuakhali, Bangladesh
A dead ” Irrawaddy dolphin,” 8 feet long and 2 feet wide, has floated on the Kuakata beach in Patuakhali with a cracked stomach.
So far in 2022, with this, a total of 9 dead dolphins have come to the beach this year.
On May 28, 2022, at noon, a local fisherman named Md Nizam saw the dead dolphin in the Gangamati Point area. Later, members of the local biodiversity protection movement have informed.
Nizam said, “The dolphin has a nets mark on its body with a cracked stomach. It assumes to have died about four or five days ago. The dolphin remained stuck on the shore with blood dripping from her body during the tide. This was a giant dead dolphin to arrive this year.”
Sagarika Smriti, an associate researcher at the Patuakhali District WorldFish, Bangladesh, said, “The dolphin that died was an Irrawaddy dolphin. The stomach ruptured; it looks like death happened long ago.”
Ruman Imtiaz Tushar, team leader of the Kuakata Dolphin Protection Committee, said, “Our members reached the spot after receiving information from the fishermen. Later, they talk to the forest department and arrange for the dolphin to bury in a suitable place.”
