The government will dig canals, streams, haor, and other water reservoirs in the country to prevent floods: Environment Minister, Bangladesh
Md Shahab Uddin, Minister of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Bangladesh, said, “The government will take measures to dig canals, streams, haor, and other water reservoirs in the country to prevent floods.”
If the water holding capacity of the reservoirs can increase, it will be possible to reduce the intensity of floods. Environmental protection should give utmost importance to reducing natural disasters. The indiscriminate cutting of trees, mountains, and dunes should stop.
He said these things as a special guest at the round table discussion on ‘Frequent floods in Sylhet region: causes, rehabilitation and permanent solutions’ organized by Sylhet Division Journalist Association at Jatiya Press Club.
The Environment Minister said, “The Prime Minister had directed the reopening of the Surma and Kushiyar riverbeds. The government has taken extraordinary measures to rehabilitate the flood-affected people.
The Minister called upon the rich people of the society to come forward the help helpless people in any disaster.”
