Development projects should think about service sustainability in advance
Climate change impacts are now everywhere. Mitigating these impacts and sustaining project services in development projects should consider early.
The DPP or development project proposal should include the identification of climate risks in the area concerned and risk mitigation measures. However, there has yet to be an idea or action in implementing the project. Many projects need to be more sustainable and could spend better.
A seminar recently highlighted these observations in Dhaka, organized by the Program Department of the Planning Commission, Bangladesh, and MA Mannan, Planning Minister, was the chief guest at that event.
Members of various departments of the Planning Commission of Bangladesh and representatives of development aid organizations were present. Dr. Nurun Nahar, the joint head of the activities department, presented the main article.
MA Mannan said, ‘’Stopping natural disasters is impossible. However, projects can protect from disaster impacts. The potential risk of natural calamities can assess early in project formulation, and losses can minimize through effective measures.
For this, the capacity of the project stakeholders must increase so that there is no damage to the project due to natural calamities and no wastage of money.’’
As the main article states, there needs to be more risk review in the planning and implementation of development projects. What kind of risk reduction measures will take in the project area and how much it will cost has yet to be determined.
Dr. Nurun Nahar said, ‘’Before undertaking a project for sustainable development, the risk of the concerned area must assess and included in the Development Projects Proposal (DPP).’’
