Climate change could be more severe: U.N. chief
UN Secretary-General António Guterres has warned that the climate disaster has started due to climate change. He said extreme weather is hitting every part of the world.
The Secretary-General issued this warning in the context of the climate report published by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) on September 21, 2023. According to the report, this summer was the hottest ever recorded in the Northern Hemisphere.
Citing data from the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service, the WMO said yesterday that August was the world’s warmest month by a “large margin” since records began and the second warmest after July.
August was estimated to be about 1.5°C warmer than pre-industrial times. Not only at the surface, the monthly average sea surface temperature last August was also the highest, at around 21 degrees Celsius.
In such a situation, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a statement that the extreme heat of summer is affecting everyone.
According to COS, this year is the second warmest year since 2016. Climate change is causing more intense and frequent heat waves, the United Nations has warned. As a result, environmental pollution is increasing. The health of various organisms, including humans, is under threat.
Extreme heat waves can pose severe risks to human health, the WMO said in its Air Quality and Climate Bulletin.
