A pollution-free environment is our basic right
More deaths have occurred due to environmental pollution in the past two years than the coronavirus pandemic. This information is known from the United Nations environment report published on December 28, 2023.
The UN Human Rights Council has already included a pollution-free environment as a fundamental human right. The report will be presented in the council meeting next month. Its draft was published on the website of the Human Rights Council on December 28, 2023.
In the past two years, around 9 million people worldwide died due to pollution from pesticides, plastic, electronics, and chemicals. In comparison, approximately 5.9 million people have died from the coronavirus during the same period.
The report alleged that UN member states are not taking effective measures to prevent pollution. Member states have failed to control environmental pollution and toxic chemicals, violating the right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment for people worldwide.
The report calls for a global ban on polythene, non-stick cookware, and non-perishable chemicals. The reason for this is that these elements create an environment for cancer in the human body.
The report recommends cleaning up the polluted areas of the world. It has been recommended to relocate vulnerable people to safer areas with severe conditions.
The places where nuclear weapons are tested are among the most polluted areas in the world.
UN Human Rights Chief Michelle Bachelet said that environmental pollution is the biggest threat to the world today.
