Bangladesh wants China’s Cooperation to Control Air Pollution
Syeda Rizwana Hasan, a leading environmentalist and advisor in Bangladesh’s Interim Government, in charge of the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MOEFCC), Bangladesh and the Ministry of Water Resources (MOWR), Bangladesh, wants China’s cooperation to control air pollution. She has urged China to share Beijing’s experience in controlling air pollution with Bangladesh.
Syeda Rizwana Hasan spoke at a seminar on ‘Environmentally Sustainable Development and Management in China and Bangladesh,’ organized by the Center for China Studies at Dhaka University on January 12.
Syeda Rizwana Hasan said that Bangladesh can learn a lot from China’s related policies and innovative initiatives. She focused on sharing information about common rivers and wanted to learn about China’s plans for the Brahmaputra River.
The Environment Advisor said, “We need true sustainable development. We need to reorganize the course of development, not compete to conquer nature. Polluters must be held accountable. Destruction of rivers or mountains for the leather industry is unacceptable.”
The environmental advisor also said, ‘The use of technology must follow the basic laws of nature. Instead of controlling nature, we must manage our development activities sustainably.’
Syeda Rizwana Hasan has called on Dhaka University to ban single-use plastic on campus.
Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen and Dhaka University Vice Chancellor Niaz Ahmed Khan were special guests at the seminar. Professor Li Fengting of Tongji University presented the keynote address.
In addition, Professor Shamshad Mortuza, Director of the Department of International Relations of Dhaka University, spoke at the seminar.
