Amphan damaged BDT 3.00 Billion in the Fisheries Sector at Khulna, Bangladesh.

According to the source of the Department of Fisheries, Khulna Division, the super cyclone Amphan has caused significant damage to BDT 2.841billion in the fisheries sector at 197 unions in six districts under Khulna Division, Bangladesh. The damage has been done to fishes like Carp (white fish), Shrimp, Crab, eel fish, and infrastructure.

Among the six districts, a total of BDT.967.24 million in Khulna, BDT.57.13 million in Bagerhat, BDT.1.76 billion in Satkhira, BDT.24.95 million in Jhenaidah, BDT.26.20 million in Chuadanga and BDT.830 thousand in Magura has been lost. This information has been provided by the Khulna Divisional Office of the Department of Fisheries.

Narayan Chandra Mandal, Deputy Director, Department of Fisheries, Khulna Division, has given information about the losses. The cyclone has caused a loss of almost BDT.640.00 million of the fishes like Carp, BDT.1.89 billion of Shrimp, BDT.31 million of Carp minnow, BDT.159.85 million of Shrimp minnow (PL), BDT.18.38 million of eel fish and Crab and BDT.109.4 million of infrastructures of 31 Upazilas of Khulna.

According to the Divisional Fisheries Office, the storm has damaged 8,928 ponds and Dighis (lakes types ponds) (including 613 eel fish and crabs) on 1592.12 hectares of land, 22,247 fences on 24762.35 hectares of land. As a result, 3160.12 metric tons of carp fish and 17,782,000 pieces of carp fish minnow, 3635.69 metric tons of shrimp, and 29.36 million pieces of shrimp minnow (PL) and 42.95 metric tons of crab and eel fish were damaged.

According to the Khulna District Fisheries Office, saltwater intrusion flooded 8,096 ponds and Dighis (including 240 eel fish and crabs) on 625.61 hectares of land and 6,886 white fish and shrimp farms on 8577.8 hectares of land. As a result, 1176.9 metric tons of white fish and 10.5 million pieces of carp minnow, 1047.09 metric tons of shrimp, and 14 million pieces of shrimp minnow (PL) and 17.5 metric tons of crabs and eel fish have been damaged.

Khulna District Fisheries Officer, Abu Saeed, said, “The cyclone has caused damage to the fisheries sector of 5 Upazilas of Khulna costing around 960.72 million BDT. Among this, 512 million 370 thousand BDT has been lost in Koyra Upazilla, 25 million 998 thousand BDT in Dakope Upazilla, 79 million 375 thousand BDT in Paikgachha, 267 million 250 BDT in Dumuria and 82 million 250 thousand BDT in Batiaghata.”

He further said, “In 5 Upazilas of Khulna, carp fish of value of BDT. 292.51 million, shrimp fish of value of BDT. 594.21 million, carp minnow of the value of BDT.14 .50 million, shrimp minnow (PL) of the value of BDT.12.08 million, eel fish of the value of BDT.9.50 million and infrastructural damage of the value BDT.43.6 million has been caused.”
