The endangered tortoise rescued from a pond in Pirganj, Thakurgaon, died. The rescued tortoise weighed 40 kg. Dinajpur Assistant Forest Conservation Officer confirmed the incident.
The rescued tortoise has never been seen before in the Thakurgaon area. It is thought that there may be more turtles of this species in the area. Thanks to the turtle, the species may find a new way to conserve.
The tortoise died at Dinajpur Ramsagar Zoo around 7 pm on May 14, 2020. Dinajpur Assistant Forest Conservation Officer Shaheen Kabir said that someone had applied poison to the pond for catching fish from where the tortoise was rescued.
He added that the tortoise was in motion even after it was brought to the zoo by the forest department. When it freezes a bit, an injection is applied to it by the advice of a veterinarian. But it died at about 7:30 pm.
It is to be mentioned that on Thursday evening, the locals saw the tortoise on the bank of the pond of Abu Raihan in Tamlai area. At this time, they informed the owner of the pond. Later, the pond owner and locals rescued the tortoise and informed the Upazila administration.
Pond owner Abu Raihan said the pond is hundreds of years old. The water of this pond never dries up. Turtles have been caught from here before. But their weight will not be more than 10-15 kg. But the locals killed them before he knew it. This time he did not let it happen.
