The Arctic or polar regions are experiencing the most serious impact of global warming. As the ‘permafrost’ (frozen ground) in Siberia and Alaska melts, a lot of methane gas that has been trapped under it for thousands of years is now coming into the air. Scientists have called it a terrifying ‘time bomb’ of climate change.
Methane emissions and global impact: Methane gas is about 80 times more powerful than carbon dioxide in retaining heat in the atmosphere.
Positive feedback loop: Melting ice releases methane, which warms the earth. As the earth warms, the ice is melting faster—this has created a deadly cycle.
Creation of large craters: In many places in Siberia, methane gas is exploding, creating huge holes or ‘craters’ underground, which has surprised geologists.
These methane emissions prove that climate change is spiraling out of our control. Global agreements to reduce greenhouse gases must be implemented immediately and rigorously.
