Severe Impact of Climate Change: Bangladesh Endures 25 Extra Days of Extreme Heatwaves in Vulnerable Regions This Summer
Alarming scientific data has been revealed regarding how daily life is being disrupted by the direct effects of global warming and climate change during the summer season.
A recent analysis by the international research organization ‘Climate Central’ indicates that, due to the compounded effects of climate change, Bangladesh experienced an additional 25 days of unprecedented and hazardous heatwaves beyond the norm during the summer period (June to August) of this year.
Temperatures in many cities stayed very high for around 31 days. They went above what people can usually handle.
Key Research Findings and Public Health Impact: The organization’s report states that temperature-related risks have escalated manifold across Asia’s densely populated regions due to human-induced greenhouse gas emissions and the indiscriminate use of fossil fuels:
Health Risks and Loss of Work Hours: These prolonged heatwaves have placed low-income individuals, day laborers, and outdoor workers at severe health risk. Hospital admission rates have risen significantly due to heatstroke, dehydration, and various complex health complications among the elderly.
Excessive city heat: The ‘Urban Heat Island’ effect has grown worse in big cities, like Dhaka, because there are too much concrete and not enough plants, making life hard for regular people.
