Bangladesh Government will demolish those buildings if it causes environmental damage
Strict action will be taken as per the rules, including demolition, if any environmental damage is caused by building construction, including filling wetlands, said Major General (Rtd.) Md Siddiqur Rahman Sarkar, Chairman, Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK).
He said these things during a discussion with housing organizations and owners regarding the planning approval and design approval of unauthorized residential areas under RAJUK’s Zone-5 and Zone-7 in the meeting room of the Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha )RAJUK) on January 26.
Stressing the importance of protecting the environment and preserving wetlands, the RAJUK Chairman said that, if necessary, permission will be given to construct earthquake-resistant 100-story multi-stories buildings with underground parking on large areas, so that the rate of construction of small buildings that damage the environment decreases and multi-storis buildings can be constructed in existing residential areas without filling wetlands. This will reduce the amount of environmental damage.
The RAJUK Chairman also said that a lot of work has been done on the rules in the last 5 months. We are moving towards the construction of high-rise buildings. We have to follow the rules and coordinate with environmentalists and construction experts to conserve water bodies.
RAJUK will try its best in this regard. Necessary eviction activities, including disconnecting gas and electricity in unauthorized areas, will be carried out.
Md Ashraful Islam, Chief Urban Planner Of RAJUK, said in the meeting that according to Detailed Area Plan – DAP, where there is an obstacle to approval, it must be followed and approval cannot be given there.
To gain approval, a residential area or institution must own at least 75% of its land and adhere to land development rules. At the same time, importance must be given to all civic amenities.
Mohammad Abdul Ahad, Member (Planning) of RAJUK said that the checklist of DAP’s environmental and building approval rules should be placed in the form of signboards at various places.
A database should also be created. In addition to the concerned officials of RAJUK, representatives of housing institutions and owners’ associations were present at the meeting.
