Bangladesh is at the highest risk of climate change: Environment Minister, Bangladesh
Md. Shahab Uddin, the Minister of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Bangladesh, has said, “Bangladesh is the first victim among the countries affected by climate change without harming the environment. “
The environment ministry said this while virtually attending the inaugural function of an international conference held at Liaquat Ali Auditorium of the Jagadish Chandra Bose Academic Building, Khulna University, Bangladesh.
The environment minister further said, “Bangladesh is most vulnerable due to climate change. For this, the present government is giving utmost importance to the issue of climate change.
A national adaptation plan on climate change is preparing. Research and knowledge management have given importance to maintaining the environment’s balance. Due to the geographical location of Khulna University, there is a huge scope for environmental and forest-related research.”
Begum Habibun Nahar, Deputy Minister of MoEFCC, Bangladesh, was the special guest at the conference. In her speech, she said,
‘This conference of Khulna University is to understand how much the world is concerned about the damage done to the environment by climate change. It’s a message to other universities that it’s time to think about our environment.
The Sundarbans have been protecting us from various natural calamities. Due to these disasters, the Sundarbans are damaging, decreasing its size.”
“The Sundarbans coastal southwest is most affected by at least 2-4 disasters every year. Without the Sundarbans, human settlement and living on this coast would not be possible. Environmentalists have to come forward to think about this,” she added.
According to the organizers, various local and foreign experts, scientists from India, Pakistan, Nepal, UAE, Sweden, and other countries participated physically and virtually. The conference will feature eight key-note papers and 125 research articles.
