Climate finance must be fair: Environmental Advisors
Syeda Rizwana Hasan, a leading environmentalist and advisor in Bangladesh’s Interim Government, in charge of the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MOEFCC), Bangladesh and the Ministry of Water Resources (MOWR), Bangladesh, said climate finance, adaptation and mitigation strategies must be equitable and prioritize the most vulnerable populations.
She said that the commitment of 100 billion dollars should be increased to deal with the international financial crisis. Financial aid from developed countries will solve some of the financial problems but will not achieve real climate justice.
She spoke at a seminar called “Road to Baku: COP29-Position of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) on Climate Change in Bangladesh” at the Department of Environment, Bangladesh in Dhaka on October 27.
Syeda Rizwana Hasan reiterated that Bangladesh will remain firmly committed to limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. She emphasized on adaptation measures and urged youth to be involved in the process.
In addition, she noted the need to articulate international challenges and talk about ambitious mitigation initiatives. Ahead of the COP29 conference, she also highlighted the importance of active participation of civil society in Bangladesh.
