Dubai will plant 100 million trees to protect the environment
The world’s largest coastal urban renewal project is being undertaken along the 70 km coastline of Dubai, United Arab Emirates. This project can be implemented under the initiative of a country called ‘Dubai Mangrove’.
Under this, a large mangrove or salt water forest will be developed on the coast. There are plans to plant more than 100 million trees. The whole ecosystem of the coastal area will be based on this forest.
The sustainable city construction company ‘ URB‘ has taken this initiative to reform the coast of Dubai.
Planting trees on the coast can absorb 1.2 million metric tons of carbon dioxide annually, similar to removing 260,000 gas-powered cars from the road.
“Mangroves are nature’s own defense against coastal erosion and sea level rise,” said URB founder and urban planner Baharash Bagherian. This is a major concern for any coastal city like Dubai.
Bagherian said, “Currently we are in the research stage. Six locations have been initially identified for the initiation of the project. These places are being designed for renovation. The project is expected to be completed by 2040.”
URB’s other designs are still in the planning stage. These include building 1,000 kilometers of cycling roads by 2040 and a floating island called Dubai Reef.
