Four of every five want climate action: UN
A UN survey found that 4 in 5 people want their country to strengthen its commitment to combating climate change. Based on the opinion of 75 thousand people, this global survey was published on June 23, 2024.
The U N Development Programme,University of Oxford, and GeoPoll conducted a survey with 15 questions over the phone in 77 countries, representing 87% of the world’s population. About 80 percent of survey participants want governments to step up efforts to combat global warming.
According to the survey, poor countries are the most demanding to combat global warming. These countries have expressed 89% support. However, according to the survey, there is also strong support (76%) for this claim in the richest G20 countries.
The world’s largest emitters of greenhouse gases, China (73 percent) and the United States (66 percent), also favored increased climate action.
“We have undeniable evidence from the survey results that people around the world support strong climate action. This is important as world leaders make decisions regarding the next commitments under the The Paris Agreement by 2025,” stated Casey Flynn, UNDP’s Global Climate Director.
Most people in 62 out of the 77 countries surveyed are in favor of quickly shifting from fossil fuels to clean energy.
This included China (80 and the United States (54 percent). However, only 16 percent of survey participants in Russia were in favor of strengthening the fight against global warming.
People’s concern about global warming has also increased. The survey found that 56 percent said they think about climate change at least once a week.
