Rural women are mostly affected by climate change in Bangladesh
Rural women in Bangladesh suffer more financial losses in the face of climate change and natural disasters.
Rural women in Bangladesh suffer more financial losses in dealing with climate change and natural disasters. According to a recent study, women have to spend 30% more to deal with these effects.
The data came from a study conducted by the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) on May 25, 2022.
According to the study, rural households in Bangladesh have to spend 15% of their monthly budget to deal with disasters.
However, the amount spent in a household where women earn is almost double. This is because women earn less than men.
In addition, many men in northwestern Bangladesh move to other cities each season, leaving women in charge of the household. Then these women have to take care of the house.
The survey conducts on 3,094 rural houses in 10 districts. The study looked at household spending, storms, floods, droughts, salinity, and heat.
Of these, 43% of families are affected by floods, 41% by storms, and 83% by long-term disasters like drought or salinity.
In 2021, the cost of dealing with the disaster of each family was BDT.7500. If the entire rural population estimates it is about BDT.15 billion.
Due to the floods, the cost of living for women was 2% higher than for families with a higher income for men. Moreover, they have to spend 3% more to survive the extreme heat.
In addition, women have to spend 30% more to survive the storm. This observes during Cyclone Amphan.
Researchers recommend that the Bangladesh government and development partners spend more money on these people in areas prone to climate change and disasters.
