The contribution of butterflies to environmental protection is immense
The diverse collection of animals on earth has increased the beauty of this planet many times. Among these animals are butterflies. They are appreciated all over the world for their colorful beauty. The color of their wings fascinates everyone.
There are more than 18,000 species of butterflies in the world. Of these, about 1,500 species are in the Indian subcontinent.
A recent study by Professor Monowar Hossain Tuhin found over 420 species in Bangladesh.
The Bangladesh Red List by the IUCN includes 305 butterfly species. Butterflies play a very important role in the environment. The contribution of butterflies can be explained in several key aspects.
Pollination:
Butterflies play an important role in pollination of flowers. Like bees and other pollinators, butterflies also fly from flower to flower to spread pollen, which is essential for plant reproduction.
Role in the food chain:
Caterpillars and adult butterflies are food for various birds, frogs, lizards, and small mammals. This helps maintain the food chain.
Environmental health indicators:
Butterflies act as indicators of the health of the environment. Depending on their number and diversity, the health of the environment can be determined. The presence of butterflies indicates that the ecosystem is healthy in a particular area.
Biodegradation process:
Butterfly larvae eat dead leaves, helping decompose them faster. This helps increase soil fertility.
Role in the beauty and tourism industry:
The colorful and beautiful appearance of butterflies is impressive to humans. It contributes to the ecotourism industry and creates research and recreational opportunities for nature lovers.
The decline in the number of butterflies is a warning sign for the environment. Due to pesticide use, deforestation, and climate change, butterfly habitats are decreasing. Planting trees, reducing pesticide use, and maintaining their suitable environment are essential for their conservation.
