Greening should be increased to protect the environment: Environment Advisor of Bangladesh

Syeda Rizwana Hasan, a leading environmentalist and advisor in Bangladesh’s Interim Government, in charge of the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MOEFCC), Bangladesh and the Ministry of Water Resources (MOWR), Bangladesh, suggested creating a specific urban philosophy to build a livable Dhaka.

She said, we want to make Dhaka livable. In this case, not only mega projects should be done, greening should be increased.

She spoke at a discussion program at the RAJUK Auditorium in Dhaka on October 17.

Rizwana Hasan said that a specific action plan is needed to make Dhaka livable. It is important to create a city vision for Dhaka.

Not only should mega projects be done, greening should be increased. There should be open space, seating, and youth sports opportunities.

She said Dhaka should be made for all people. Youth need to be involved in building a developed and eco-friendly city. Their creativity can make cities livable. For this reason, she proposed to include the youth in the activities of RAJUK.

The advisor also said that the rights of slum dwellers and riverine people should be ensured in the development plan.

Adilur Rahman Khan, advisor to the Ministries of Housing and Public Works and Industry, stated that Dhaka is dirty and lacks trees for fresh air.

All the trees have been cut down. Dhaka has become just a city. There is no housing system for the poor here. Whether we can change this city is a challenge for us.

He said, if we want to plan urban development involving the youth, then it needs to start now. Because if you do it later, it might be too late.

Also, there are various organizations, citizens’ organizations and professional bodies, which also need to be involved in urban development.

Adilur Rahman Khan, an advisor to the Ministries of Housing and Public Works and Industry, was the chief speaker at the event.

Secretary of the Ministry of Housing and Public Works. UN Resident Coordinator Gwen Lewis and Additional Secretary Shakila Zereen Ahmed spoke at the event chaired by Hamidur Rahman Khan. Joint Secretary Naila Ahmed presented the main article.
