Bio-Jet Fuel: Zero-Carbon Revolution in Aviation

Algae-Based Bio-Jet Fuel: ‘Algae-Based Bio-Jet Fuel’ on the Way to Commercial Production

The aviation industry, one of the largest contributors to global warming, is now on the way to a zero-carbon solution. Scientists have made significant progress in developing low-cost, high-performance and environmentally friendly algae-based bio-jet fuel and starting its commercial production.

The algae used in the production of this new fuel absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through photosynthesis. The oil from this algae is then extracted and converted into jet fuel. This process emits up to 80% less carbon than conventional fossil-based jet fuel.

Researchers at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands have patented a process that can dramatically reduce water use and production costs when growing algae.

These biofuels are much more environmentally friendly than biofuels made from food crops (such as corn or soybeans) because they do not require agricultural land. The world’s largest airlines and aircraft manufacturers are investing in the production of these algae-based fuels, as they are essential to meting thir ‘net-zero’ goals by 2050.

This technology proves that it is possible to create alternatives to fossil fuels in even the most challenging industries, giving rise to a new ‘green energy’ economy in the global economy
