Md. Shahab Uddin, Minister of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Bangladesh, informed that plant species survey activities are ongoing to preserve the country’s forests and biodiversity.

He said this while speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration workshop of the plant species survey project at Barisal Division and Sylhet Division, Bangladesh, at the Bangladesh National Herbarium in Mirpur via a virtual connection from the official residence on August 03, 2022.

“For the conservation and sustainable management of plant species in the country’s ecosystems, it is necessary to know the accurate statistics of the country’s plant species.

A complete plant survey can know the updated statistics, location, and conservation status of the country’s plant resources. Barisal is an ever-changing and ever-decreasing Division of Bangladesh regarding plant diversity.

The number of plant species in this category is estimated to be more than one thousand. On the other hand, Sylhet Division has a favorable environment for creating abundant plant diversity,” the environment ministry continued.

“The number of plant species in the Sylhet division is more than 1 thousand 500. However, no comprehensive survey of Sylhet Division’s flora diversity has yet been completed.

Therefore, in this project, to determine the actual status of the plant resources of the Barisal and Sylhet Divisions, documenting the diversity, conservation, and balanced use, about 70,000 plant samples will collect through a field-level scientific survey. Two books containing information will be prepared and published on the website,” he further added.

Professors from various universities of the country, researchers from research institutes, and officials of various departments/organizations of the ministry were present at the event.
