Bangladesh to receive EU and European Investment Bank support for environmental protection
Syeda Rizwana Hasan, a leading environmentalist and advisor in Bangladesh’s Interim Government, in charge of the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MOEFCC), Bangladesh and the Ministry of Water Resources (MOWR), Bangladesh, said that the European Union (EU) and the European Investment Bank (EIB) will provide support to Bangladesh for environmental protection.
Support will encompass technical training, renewable energy projects, electric public transport, capacity building, and pollution prevention activities.
The advisor made this statement during a meeting with the EU-EIB delegation at her office on January 5. The delegation was led by EIB Vice President Nicola Beer.
Rizwana Hasan stated that international support is essential for controlling air pollution, cleaning rivers, using renewable energy, improving sanitation, establishing elephant sanctuaries, and conserving biodiversity. She reiterated the government’s commitment to involving youth in protecting the environment and biodiversity.
Nicola Beer commended Bangladesh’s initiative, stating that the EU and EIB will support its environmental development with expertise and resources.
He mentioned the possibility of joint initiatives in forestry, climate change mitigation, sustainable housing, green bonds and waste management.
The meeting included the secretaries of the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, EU Ambassador to Bangladesh Michael Miller, and senior officials from the EU and EIB.
