Bangladesh will ban eighteen environmental harmful Chemicals

The Government of Bangladesh has initiated a ban on eighteen chemicals that harm the environment. The cabinet Ministers have approved this proposal in a meeting held recently.

At the cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Sheik Hasina presided over and approved the proposal. Khondaker Anowerul Islam, the Secretary of the cabinet, informed this after the meeting.



He informed, “Eighteen Chemicals globally ban on account of Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) from COP.4 in 2009 to COP 9 in 2019.”

These are:

  • Polychlorinated biphenyls,
  • DDT,
  • Endosulfan and its related isomers,
  • Brominated diphenyl,
  • Dioxin, Furans, and Other Unintentional Persistent Organic Pollutants,
  • Hexabromocyclododecane,
  • Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid, its salts, and Perfluorooctane sulfonyl fluoride,
  • Pentachlorophenol and its salts and esters,
  • Polychlorinated naphthalenes,
  • Ecabromodiphenyl,
  • Chlorinated paraffin,
  • decabromodiphenyl ether
  • Dicofol,
  • Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), its salts, and
  • PFOA related compounds



“We have discussed the matter with the All Bangladesh Government Ministries and its Departments, Universities’ scholars, and Business Communities in this matter and said it’s necessary to ban this persistent. These are not used in our country,” the Cabinet Secretary informed.

The Cabinet Secretary further said regarding this, “The Stockholm Convention selected these 18 persistent for a global ban, Bangladesh support this.”
