Dhaka ranks the fifth position in terms of air pollution levels globally: Global Air report, 2022
Air pollution has increased to unhealthy levels around the world. Dhaka ranks fifth on the list of pollution levels. This information obtains by analyzing the air pollution situation of more than seven thousand cities in the world.
Two US-based organizations, the Health Effects Institute and the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, released the State of Global Air report.
According to the report, the annual average presence of Fine Particles ( Particulate Matter PM 2.5) in the air per cubic meter of Dhaka is 71.4 micrograms, and Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) is 23.6 micrograms.
The generation of nitrogen oxide causes by vehicles, power plants, and industries and often burning fuel in household cooking.
Because city dwellers have heavy traffic and live near busy roads, they expose to nitrogen dioxide pollution at higher rates than rural dwellers.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) Air Quality guidelines, the acceptable annual presence of PM 2.5 is five micrograms per cubic meter, and Nitrogen Dioxide is ten micrograms per cubic meter.
The new report analyzes air pollution and its effects on health in more than 7,000 cities worldwide. The Health Effects Institute and the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation report is prepared based on Air Quality data from 2010 to 2019.
The two organizations said that India’s capital New Delhi tops the list of cities with the most polluted air in the world. The average annual concentration of Particulate Matter PM2.5 in the city is 110 micrograms per cubic meter.
The second one is Kolkata; another Indian city with an average annual concentration of PM2.5 is 84 micrograms per cubic meter annually. Apart from this, the third place in the list is 83.6 micrograms for the city of Kano, Nigeria.
Peru’s capital Lima, which ranks fourth, has 73.2, and Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka has an average annual concentration of PM 2.5 is 71.4 micrograms per cubic meter annually.
