Farewell to terracotta bricks: ‘Bio-bricks’ and the carbon-negative construction industry

Black smoke has begun to disappear from the skies of Bangladesh in 2026. Under strict government directives, almost all traditional brick kilns in the country have been closed.

Instead, eco-friendly ‘bio-bricks’ or non-burnt bricks have taken their place. This March 2026 report says that Bangladesh’s construction industry is now changing for the better. They are not burning soil to make bricks anymore.

How are these bricks made?

A study has shown that the bricks used in 2026 are mostly made from river silt, fly ash, and a special kind of chemical bond. They are not burned in a fire, but are dried in an automatic machine at high pressure.

This process produces no carbon emissions. Some bricks utilize special bacteria that absorb $CO_2$ from the air, enhancing the strength of the bricks. This is the biggest surprise.er.

Environmental Protection:

The amount of topsoil that was cut from agricultural land every year for brick kilns has completely stopped in 2026. This has started to have a positive impact on food production.

The Department of Environment, Bangladesh, says air pollution in Dhaka is down by 40 percent from last year because brick kilns have been closed.

Economy and Sustainability:

Bio-bricks are light in weight, which has reduced the construction cost by 15 percent. In addition, these bricks are heat-insulating, which has reduced the need for air conditioning (AC) inside the house.

In 2026, Bangladesh is now the first country in the world to successfully move towards 100% eco-friendly bricks.
