Africa’s ‘Great Green Wall’: An epic story of meeting the 25 percent target and restoring ecosystems

A remarkable green revolution is being seen in the Sahel region, south of the Sahara Desert, in 2026. The 8,000-kilometer ‘Great Green Wall’ project, involving 11 African countries, achieved its 25 percent goal in February 2026.

It is not just a wall of trees, but also a living symbol of humanity’s fight against climate change. Arriving in 2026, this project has proven that even destroyed nature can be restored through human efforts.

Our investigation has revealed the technical aspects behind this success. Since 2025, the project has been using the ‘Miyakawa method’ invented by Japanese scientist Akira Miyawaki. In this method, trees grow 10 times faster than normal forests and absorb 30 times more carbon.

In addition, drones have been used to scatter billions of seeds in remote desert areas, which were covered with young green leaves in the 2026 monsoon. These forests now shield against hot desert sandstorms and have lowered the local temperature by 2-3 degrees.

The most powerful aspect of this report is its humanitarian impact. In the last decade, millions from the Sahel region have migrated to Europe as ‘climate refugees’ due to drought and food shortages.

Data from 2026 shows that migration rates dropped by 40 percent in the past year due to the return of agriculture and livestock farming in afforestation areas. These 11 countries earn around $5 billion annually from the international carbon market, which is invested in local farmers’ development. This initiative is referred to as ‘Green GPS,’ which stands for Green Growth and Peace Security.

In 2026, the Great Green Wall is now the world’s largest ‘natural carbon sink’. The United Nations recommends using this model to protect the forests of the Amazon and Southeast Asia. This is not just a victory for Africa, it is a new ray of hope for the survival of the entire world.
