Tarique Rahman, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, gave his first important speech at the 81st United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York. In his speech—delivered in Bangla—he ensuring global climate justice.
Call for Climate Justice and Strong Action at COP31: The Prime Minister pointed out that Bangladesh faces serious environmental problems. While the country does not produce much carbon, its people bear the brunt of climate change. She urged developed nations to take swift and effective measures regarding climate justice, adequate climate financing, and the disbursement of funds under favorable terms at the upcoming COP31 conference.
Outlining the government’s specific internal action plans for environmental protection, she mentioned:
Mega Tree Plantation: An ambitious program has been launched to plant 250 million trees across the country over the next five years to maintain ecological balance.
Water Resource Management: Dredging and re-excavation work on approximately 20,000 kilometers of rivers and canals has commenced to tackle floods and droughts. Additionally, special emphasis has been placed on the Teesta Master Plan, the Padma Barrage Project, and ensuring the flow of fresh water into the Sundarbans.
In his concluding remarks, the Prime Minister expressed her firm resolve to build a humane Bangladesh that is youthful, technology-driven, and inclusive.
